Practical Learning

David Noyes, a National Board-certified ELD educator with over 30 years of classroom experience. David deeply understands the challenges of teaching English to older students from highly diverse cultural and educational backgrounds. However, he could not find any tools that met the needs for newcomers and long-term English learners (LTELs) in the secondary grades. This led David to partner with Language Tree Online (our curriculum partner) to come out with the first standards-aligned ELD program that meets middle and high school English learners at their unique levels.

David firmly believes that “language is the driver”, which means that building a solid foundation in language (rather than just focusing on vocabulary or content) is critical. This philosophy is infused throughout our course content.

David is also an award-winning curriculum writer, having developed K-5 curricula in the areas of Language Arts and English Language Development for Long Beach Unified School District and McGraw-Hill.

SUPPORT

MAXIMIZE YOUR POTENTIAL!

We provide students with 50 enjoyable, interesting audio/visual learning tools in the FOUNDATION stage that build beyond the scope of the online lesson. These supporting items are fun, culturally familiar, and deliver an engaging method of building English language skills.

The support objective is for our students to be encouraged, engaged, and empowered to seek out additional sources to support enhancing their English language skills.

Five items (one item from each of the five categories) will become accessible after the student completes every three lessons in FOUNDATION. The gradual release allows students to take their time to enjoy each one without becoming overwhelmed. Below you will find descriptions of each support category:

  • 10 Books: some are related to English lessons, some are from popular movies, and some are historical
  • 10 Poems: from famous poets throughout the years
  • 10 Music & Lyrics: popular songs from the 80s, 90s, & beyond
  • 10 Heroes: five males & five females who have influenced generations of people
